My Adventures in Disc Golf

Posted on May 3, 2007

Today, my department went to a local park for team building. We had lunch from Atlanta Bread, enjoyed friendly conversation and then, Bob (I swear that’s his name), the disc golf instructor started telling us about disc golf.

What is disc golf, you ask? Well I’m about to tell ya.

Wikipedia (the most reliable source in the world ) says that:

Disc Golf (D-Golf, Frisbee Golf, or Frolf) is a sport in which individual players or teams throw a flying disc into a basket or other target. According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, “The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc.”

Disc golf is similar to golf and uses much of the same rules and terminology. Unlike golf, most courses are located in public parks and are free to play. The modern disc golf target consists of a metal basket with chains hanging over it and was invented in 1976.

Here’s a picture of what you do:
Disc Golf explanation

Throw the disc thingy … not “Frisbee”, we were told, “Frisbee” is a registered trademark - eh, it’s like saying “Coke” to refer to any type of soda… moving on…

Anyway, throw the disc thingy into the basket thingy… from a couple hundred feet away… with trees in the way… with the 92 degree sun beating down up… while going up and down hills… in the woods…

Do you get how miserable this was for me? Actually, I have to admit, it was kind of fun. Even though the first thing I’m doing when I get home is heading for the shower (yes, we had to go back to work…stinky and sweaty)

So now I have a new appreciation of disc golf… would I ever play it again? Eh… maybe in September when it’s cooler… if then. At least I know what those guys are doing when I drive by the park…

Oh, yeah and we got Coldstone Creamery ice cream… our manager’s treat. Never been there, but I got Cotton Candy and Vanilla in a waffle cone. And it was good.

We schemed about sneaking off to a bar somewhere, but… that didn’t really pan out, especially since we were still technically on company time.

All in all, an enlightening day!
