America’s Next Top Model Recap - Cycle 10, Episode 1

Posted on February 20, 2008

ANTM Cycle 10

The episode begins with a quick recap/countdown of all the events that have gone down in Top Model history, from the cat fights, makeovers, runway spills, etc.

The show begins and we see the 35 semi-finalists on a school bus. Marvita discussing her past experience with ANTM and how she wasn’t ready for to be on the show then but she is now.

The girls are lead into a courtyard. The Jays come out and the girls lose their minds. One of the many scream-fests to come this episode, I assume. Mr. Jay explains that they are the top 35 contests and have been chosen to attend Top Model prep (scream). Shaya, humble thing that she is says she’s excited to be in Top Model school because she studies fashion and likes to create beauty because she is beautiful.

Uh. Huh.

They are told that the group will be cut down to 13 and then they are off to get their school girl outfits and take their “ID photos”, screaming of course. The girls take their shots. Marvita admits she goes to therapy to help her with her issues. Lauren who is a punk, tomboyish chick who doesn’t seem to know why she’s there except for the fact that she has been told that she should be a model. Fatima tells how she was born in Somaila but is now living in the US and feels ostracized from the AA community because of that. Kimberly shows off how accurate her “dumb blonde stereotype might be after a blank stare down with Mr. Jay until she realized she was actually supposed to be posing.

Uh. Huh.

The next day, the girls are given a runway 101 test by Ms. J where they are told to strut their stuff while holding a backpack full of “heavy history of fashion” (we’re not really ever told what exactly that is). Ms. J warns them to avoid all the typical bad walks like excessive turning and the “shopping mall strut”. No one has a really good runway walk and Lauren and Fatima are singled out as some of the worst walkers.

After the challenge, the girls go to a football stadium (more screaming) and are greeted by cheerleaders that happen to be some of the previous contestants on ANTM - Furonda, the twins Amanda and Michelle, Jael and “that one girl” (a.k.a Joanie – SMH at Marvita not knowing who Joanie is). Guess they’re all still contractually obligated to appear on stuff like this. I was so embarrassed for them when they had to yell this cheesy cheer (we shall not repeat it or quote it on this blog, thank you very much).

Mr. Jay announces going to back to it’s roots by going back to New York (no doubt because Tyra’s talk show relocated to NYC about eight months ago. Tyra is introduced as the Homecoming Queen of Top Model Prep. And she busts out from the backstage dressed as an overemotional “surprised” homecoming queen. Through her (over-acted) “tears” she tells the girls that she’s sorry she slept with all of their boyfriends. Allison, wanting to stand out, yells back that she’s slept with Tyra’s man and Tyra comes back with the ever popular “Bitch!”

At panel, we get to know more about:

Back in the waiting room, Shaya shows the girls how to booty shake *ahem* and Fatima calls her ghetto. Shaya gets the feeling that Fatima is not calling her ghetto as a compliment. Oooh, the first sign of drama! Soooo excited!

At the commercial, we see Saleisha’s first My Life as a CoverGirl segment. She talks about being at New York Fashion week, visiting the CoverGirl factory and how she’s so happy yada yada.

When we get back, Shalynda (from the “D-dot-C”), who has unsuccessfully auditioned eight times, starts in on the drama. She gets in Fatima’s face and says that she has been called a bitch and that she has accepted being called a bitch. With a smile on her face, Fatima asks if she can call her “bitch” since Shalynda is so proud of being one. Shalynda goes off yelling something about how bitch is not her government name and blah blah blah.

Back at panel, we continue meeting the girls.

Back in the waiting room, Fatima reveals to the girls that she can’t have sex because of her circumcision. Shaya does a 180 and hugs Fatima as she cries. Marvita asks whether Fatima feels like less of a woman. Allison tells Marvita that she needs to shut up and swipes at her and Marvita warns Allison about touching her.

Back at panel:

After all the girls go through panel, they are told that their report cards are waiting outside for them so they can see who passed and who failed. 15 girls are cut including Shaya ,Shalynda, and Marguerite. The remaining girls are told to style themselves for a senior class portrait. Fatima, who admits she is a perfectionist takes the longest and decides that she will art direct her own shoot.

Tyra and the Jays go through each picture and evaluate the girls (as an aside, in her picture, Kristen reminds me of Jayla from Cycle 5).

At the commencement ceremony, Tyra announces which 13 girls have been chosen (listed in order of name called):

  1. Allison
  2. Fatima
  3. Katarzyna
  4. Kimberly
  5. Stacy-Ann
  6. Amy
  7. Aimee
  8. Claire
  9. Whitney
  10. Marvita
  11. Lauren
  12. Atalya and
  13. Ayna

Tyra announces that she had such a hard time choosing and that thirteen is an unlucky number and that she decided to pick a 14th girl – surprise! Dominique is chosen as the 14th finalist.

After a few encouraging words to the girls who didn’t get picked, Tyra announces that they are all going to New York City!

Coming Up Next Week: The girls arrive in NYC, do a runway show in Times Square and face the “most shocking elimination eva!”

And, by the way, what in the coo-coo hell is “Girlicious”?
