Speak On It

Okay, Father Mike Pfleger! For this, I admire you. Basically how to deal with Fox News. Long story short: a Fox News reporter is trying to get Father Pfleger to denounce Rev. Wright for his whole “God Damn America” speech. I love love love that he didn’t buy into the goading tactics that Fox News is known for.
Umm, ya’ll know that News Corporation, the company that owns Fox News, is trying to buy out Newsday, right? Check out the Wikipedia article on News Corporation to find out how much they really own…
Extolling the Virtues of Political Polling

Yeah, yeah, it’s another video. Live with it.
The crew at the Daily Show wanted to do their own poll because, you know, sometimes polling people at these election primaries doo-dads may not be as reliable as the media would like you to believe (Bradley effect, bandwagon effect, social desirability bias, blah blah blah).
Below is the results of their little polling experiment… all I can say is “run white dude ruuuuunnnnnnn!!!!!!”
(You’ll know what I’m talking about… oh. And POW!)

This was too funny not to share (especially for those who have seen Election).
From Slate:
Don’t you just hate when some upstart comes along and threatens your best-laid plans? We were struck by how well one of Reese Witherspoon’s monologues from the film Election fits the narrative of Campaign 2008.

Bill, no matter how big and bad you may think you are, you can’t, repeat, can’t do this a couple of weeks after your wife basically said that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s efforts weren’t shit.
Jena 6 Day of Action
Filed Under Politics, In My Thoughts, Tayo Speaks, Spread the Word, Jena Six, Damn! It's Not the 1930s Anymore! | 1 Comment
Tomorrow, September 20th, is the day that there will be a march protesting the excessive charges in the case of the Jena 6.
I say good luck to the brothers and sisters (and by that I mean those united in this cause, not just those of my race) who are able to make it to Jena for the protest.
I hope that this can cause more steps in a more positive direction.
For everyone reading who cannot make it there tomorrow or are unable to show your support in any other way, please wear ALL BLACK and send your spiritual support for those who need it.

The Jena Six

I’m not sure why I have not posted about this yet. I think that I was thinking that it’s being talked about… would me adding my two cents really be worth it?
Then I came to my senses. Maybe one person reads my blog that hasn’t read any other blog that covers it. Then they tell someone else, etc. Then I’ve helped to spread the message right?
It’s so scary to me that this happened within the last year, rather than sixty years ago…
Long story short: the Jena Six are a group black students from Jena, LA who are being charged with attempted murder for beating up a white student who was taunting them with racial slurs. The whole situation began with an incident where white students at their high school hung three nooses from the school’s tree after some black students asked for permission to sit underneath the tree which was typically reserved. You can learn more about the story here or by watching the video below. (And believe me, the whole story is a lot more effed up than that synopsis)
So, you’d expect our “leaders” (you know who, Rev. Al and Rev. Jesse) to be all up and through this case, organizing boycotts, leading rallies, pissing off the folks at Fox News… but it seems that they are more interested in crying racism when it has to do with a football star and his pit bulls than when it has to do with 6 black teenagers accused of murder because of a stupid school yard fight.
Then I guess it’s up to us… the rest of us who see where the “fight” for equality, fairness, and freedom must be fought.
What can you do?
- Click here to sign the Petition for the US Department of Justice to launch an investigation into this situation: http://www.petitiononline.com/aZ51CqmR/petition.html
- Write your congressman and/or congresswoman and/or senator or write to the Jena 6 Defense Committee, PO BOX 2798, Jena, LA 71342 (more information here)
- Blog about it, write about it, tell a friend.
Spread the word.
Time for a New Perspective?

“Until the lions tell their tales, the story of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.” - African Proverb
I came across this proverb from my contact Solomon’s blog (When Least Expected). He used it to speak on how men and women interact with each other.
I take from it something else: how do we see ourselves and how are our stories being told?
I’m sorry to anyone of another race who may be reading this, but I will be speaking primarily to readers of African descent.

Do you know how much economic influence that African Americans can and do have?
In 2003, Black Enterprise reported that “black buying power is estimated to be around $688 billion — twice as much as 2001″ and also that “the buying power of African Americans is likely to increase by 169.5% to $921 billion by the year 2008.”
Another blog I read recently reports the estimations of essayist and retired patent attorney Richard Everett that African Americans are projected to have spending power of approximately $1 trillion a year by 2010.
But how often do you spend your disposable income in a Black-owned business? How often do you read Black-owned publications? Have you ever thought of opening your own business? Do you question the angle from which stories from the media are told?
It’s time to start thinking for ourselves, looking after our own, and stop waiting on them (whoever you want them to be) to help us.

Why I can’t watch Fox News for too long…

Hillary Clinton on the campaign trail in Alabama decided to take on a “Southern” accent and recite a hymn by Rev. James Cleveland.
Fine. I’m not sure how relevant the hymn was, especially since it was shown out of context. I also personally think it was a sucky accent, but Fox News decided to make it a whole OTHER issue…
Quote - E.D. Hill from Fox News:
But would it happen elsewhere? If she was attending, say, a GLAAD convention, would she speak with a lisp? If she were attending a Hispanic convention, would she speak with a Spanish accent? Or if she were attending an African-American convention, would she start throwing out phrases — you know, ‘Homies, here I am?
Uuuuggggghhhhhh…
Thank you Fox News for showing what close-minded, rightist freaks you can really be.
Fair and balanced, indeed… I have no problem with you serving a primarily conservative agenda… do what the hell you want, but don’t say that you represent a fair and balanced view of things!
That’s my rant for the day…
