We’ve been in a constant state of canvassing, registering people to vote and trying to raise awareness of the local issues and races. And I’m getting burned out. If one more person hangs up in my ear when I call them about early voting, I don’t know what I’ll do, lol. I know that this is a very monumental election (I mean, they’re all pretty important, but this one seems to stand out). But sometimes, you wonder what you are working so hard for.

I want to thank CNN for giving me something to recharge my batteries. This story on the kids from the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta has made me realize what’s important. The next generation of politically active minds. Plus they’re cute, lol.

No one better talk to me on November 5, 6, 7… matter of fact, leave me alone till Veteran’s Day.

And just for good measure, here is this fine and swexy thang who learned the exact choreography of the video and recreated it just for you. Bwoy, if I could move that well, ya’ll would hate me, lol

I watched the premiere episode and was confused. It wasn’t bad, I just didn’t think it was something that I’d be interested in watching. And then someone (*ahem* if you’re reading this post, you know who you are, lol) started discussing the show with me, and soon I got hooked. I guess this post is a quickie review of what I think about the show. I know you’re interested, that’s why you’re still reading, lol.

By the way, some of my descriptions will involve SPOILERS. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya.

First the show in general:
Visually this show is very interesting. A lot of the scenes take place at night so it’s a pretty dark show. I think that the issues of vampires as part of human society (part of the show’s premise) is an interesting one. The way vampires are treated/referenced in the show is very similar to the civil rights issues of Blacks/African-Americans and the LGBT. It’s sort of a “vampires are people too (even though we’re dead)” type of thing and seeing the spectrum of reactions from people from complete or reluctant acceptance to complete fear and rejection of vampires. So that’s an interesting theme to watch out for. The show is also very sexualized. Kind of graphic sexual scenes and nudity aside, one of the main focuses became the issues of sex (and relationships in general) between vampires and humans, of course with reactions across the spectrum as well. One of the main characters, Jason, is outwardly repulsed by the thought of humans having sex with vampires but yet inwardly intrigued by the thought of it.

While each of the characters on the show has their ups and downs and all their issues, I’m a little put off that all the Black characters seem to fall into easy sterotypes (e.g. Tara =”angry black woman”) and I’m not sure where they are going with all the character developments in general.

Basically though, the show goes from comedy to drama to murder-mystery to romance so quickly and easily that you will find yourself getting caught up in the madness. I’ve read partial summaries and reviwes of the books that this show is based on and I’m interested in seeing where the show is headed in future seasons.

Then the characters (at least the ones that matter to me anyway):

Sookie Stackhouse
My fave description of Sookie is “virgin ho-bag” and no, I’m not the one that made that up. For whatever reason, Sookie resists all the advances of guys she meets (except for Bill the vampire; no one can resist him, lol) because she’s apparently saving herself for the right guy. All well and good. But then, this chick parades around in skin-tight booty shorts and skimpy bikinis all damn day long. Triflin’ lol. But of course you know that Vampire Bill got that on lock… he had her at hello. Also, she can hear people’s thoughts. Which means, I couldn’t have her as a friend because then she would know entirely too much, lol.

Jason Stackhouse
Needs to figure out a way to control his mini-Jason, for real. I think he’ll sex up anything that moves, well except for Tara, because he is surely oblivious to those come-hither hints she’s sending to him. Also, he needs to learn how to be a better drug addict because his fuckery is annoying. Actually, he is pretty entertaining when high. And has the best abs, ever!

Tara Thornton
She infuriates me. Not the character though, but the actress that plays her. Man she went to the first week of Southern Accents 101 and promptly dropped out. I hate to hear her speak, it’s so muddled… yes, muddled even for a Southern accent. But her braids are always on point though, lol. And I need her to figure out which guy she wants, Sam or Jason?

Bill Compton
Oooh, my date with the vampire. I think he’s kinda sexy in a pale-white-skin-tinged-with-dark-red-blood-stained-lips-and-teeth kinda way. For real tho, he’s hella creepy and likes to sneak around and show up unexpectedly. I startle easily, ya’ll. He would have to get used to being hit with whatever was in my hand whenever he showed up.

Sam Merlotte
Nice in a creepy, stalkerish way. Obsessed with Sookie but jumping Tara’s bones, eh. Whatever’s clever, my man. My enabler (read: the person that lured me back into the show) threw out a theory that he can shape-shift into that dog that hangs around the bar… and I read somewhere that may truly be the case (you’re so smart!). In my book, that makes him even creepier.

Lafayette Reynolds
My man! Love love love him. When he made his first appearance, I was like “Damn! The only other Black guy on the show and he’s gotta be gay?” But I got over that quick. My man Lafayette is the baddest queen/thug/drug dealer/internet ho out there. Stylin on everybody, yes lawd and fierce as all get out. Why have I caught myself thinking “Wow, he looks kinda pretty there?” This is one of my favorite scenes from the show:

So, in my moments of introspection, I’ve realized that I make a lot of excuses for myself. I realized that I’m like that kid on the playground that whines to their mom that the big kids won’t let them play. Basically, in the last couple of months, I’ve whined publicly and privately about feeling left out or overlooked at my job, in organizations that I’m involved with, yada yada. But whining does nothing but get people annoyed with you, or even worse gets them pitying you. And I hate people pitying me.

What am I going to do to rectify that?

So I have a couple of new mantras.

The first is “What’s stopping you?” The answer to that is usually “Me”. The second is “I’m a big kid now.” I mean, I’m 25 going on 26. Time to start acting like it.

Cute, Tayo, but what does that really mean?

It means I’m going to try and pursue my interests more intently and state my intentions more often. Not to say that it will be easy. I have a hard time being an open book and basically giving myself exposure. I’m even thinking twice about hitting that “Publish” button once I’m finished, lol. I also have a hard time doing things that may hurt people’s feelings. But hell, sometimes they’re not so worried about mine, so, there. Time to start stepping on some toes and to lace up my steel-toed boots so that they don’t step on mine. And to be less afraid of failure. Yes, definitely.

Okay, it’s starting to sound like I’m rambling, probably because I am, lol.

I just wanted to put this out there as public notice. Something to come back to and read whenever I think I’m getting back into extreme whine mode. And if you see/read/hear me going into that direction, please feel free to promptly turn me around and push me the other way, lol.
